Allahumma Anta Rabbi – Sayyidul Istighfar Dua – The Most Excellent Manner of Seeking Forgiveness

Allahumma anta rabbi dua is the Sayyidul Istighfar Dua that every Muslim man and woman must recite every single day in the morning and evening for seeking Allah’s forgiveness. One must also make sure that seeking Allah’s forgiveness while not leaving the sin, is the repentance of the liars. This dua is very beneficial, especially for new Muslims. It has various benefits for Muslims, that are discussed later in this article.

If a Muslim believer commits any sin then he should not say that there is no repentance for him in this world. However, he must seek the forgiveness of Allah for indeed Allah is the oft-forgiving and the most merciful.

Sayyidul Istighfar Meaning

Why are the Muslims weak and need to recite Sayyidul Istighfar Dua?

This question has a deep meaning and if you ponder and think you can get closer to its answer easily.

If there is any weakness in the Muslims and their enemy has power over them then the reason for that is their sins and mistakes.

My beloved brothers and sisters no sin or mistakes are big if you sincerely repent to your lord, Allah.

There are huge consequences of committing sins, and one of the worst is, it reduces the intellect of the person who commits sins. So always do Istighfar (and recite Sayyidul istighfar dua) whenever possible.

Abu Bakr as-Siddiq رضي الله عنه (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Indeed Allah forgives major sins, so do not despair, and indeed Allah punishes for minor sons, so do not be deceived.

Sharh Sahih Al-Bukharee by Ibn Battal Vol. 19 pg. 267

Importance of Seeking Forgiveness

Seeking forgiveness from Allah is very important for Muslims. There is a famous hadith of our beloved Prophet (PBUH) regarding the importance of seeking forgiveness.

Imam Ibn Uthaymin (May Allah have mercy on him) stated: Indeed seeking the forgiveness of Allah is from the things that prevent one from entering into the hellfire or Jahannam. Therefore, its upon you my brother to seek the forgiveness of Allah abundantly.

Sharh Riyadhus Salihin (6/721)

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet(P.B.U.H) said, “All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best sinners are those who repent.”

Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 2499

This hadith tells us every Muslim is a sinner but the best sinner is the one who seeks forgiveness from Allah and never does that sin again. There are many ways for seeking forgiveness from Allah but one of the simplest ways is to do Istighfar i.e. saying “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness of Allah). Prophet(PBUH) has taught us different Istighfar in different hadith.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him said, the heart of a person rusts by two actions, firstly by heedlessness, not being mindful and completely thoughtless and secondly by committing sins and grave mistakes.

Now how can we as a believer revive and restore our heart?

Well, the answer to the above question is not tough, Imam said the heart can be revitalized by two actions, with constant and never ending istighfar and lastly by continuously doing Dhikr or remembrance of Allah the most high, the merciful.

In this article, I am going to share with you the most powerful Istighfar, the master of all istighfar i.e Sayyidul Istighfar Dua.

What is Sayyidul Istighfar?

The name Sayyidul Istighfar or Allahumma anta rabbi dua comes from combining two words ‘Sayyid’ which means master and ‘Istighfar’ means seeking forgiveness. Therefore, its also known as the master of Istighfar. This is the most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah mentioned in hadith:

Important Sayyidul Istighfar Hadith

Narrated Shaddad bin Aus:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said “The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is: ‘Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Khalaqtani wa ana `Abduka, wa ana `ala `ahdika wa wa`dika mastata`tu, A`udhu bika min Sharri ma sana`tu, abu’u Laka bini`matika `alaiya, wa abu’u laka bidhanbi faghfir lee fa innahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta.” The Prophet (ﷺ) added. “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.”

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 6306

The scholars count this hadith as one of the narrations both for the night and for the day – one of the dhikrs that should be said in the early morning (sabaah), between dawn and sunrise, and at the start of the evening (masaa). Whoever says it and dies on that day, before evening, will enter Paradise. Similarly, whoever says it at night, and then dies before morning, will enter Paradise. Paradise is guaranteed for him.
