It is really very important for a Muslim believer to follow the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). And one of the beautiful sunnah is to recite Dua before sleep which is Allahumma Bismika Amutu Wa Ahya, this short and sweet dua is easy to memorize.
Every mother should try to teach this dua before sleep to their children at an early age as this little effort will contribute to bigger benefits in the hereafter, In Sha Allah.
Allahumma Bismika Amutu Wa Ahya in Arabic
اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا
Pronunciation
Allahumma Bismika Amutu Wa Ahya Meaning in English
O Allah, With Your Name, I die and I live.
From the above line, you can see how easy is this dua before sleep that anyone can memorize it without any obstruction.

Allahumma Bismika Amutu Wa Ahya Hadith
We can get the reference of Allahumma Bismika Dua from the two authentic hadiths. There is a slight variation of this dua in both the following hadiths but the meaning is exactly the same.
let’s see the first hadith, which was Narrated by Hudhaifa:
Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) intended to go to bed, he would recite: “Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live).” And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: “Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection). ” – Sahih al-Bukhari 6324
From the above hadith, you can see Bismika is placed before Allahumma, well there is no problem with that, you can recite this dua as well.
The second hadith for the dua (which is widely used) is as follows:
Narrated Abu Dhar:
Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) lay on his bed, he used to say: “Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya,” and when he woke up he would say: “Al-hamdu lil-lahilladhi ahyana ba’da ma an atana, wa ilaihi an-nushur.” – Sahih al-Bukhari 6325
As you can see, there is one more additional dua that is mentioned in both the hadith and that is the dua for waking up in the morning. Let’s elaborate on the dua in the following section.
Dua for Waking Up
As we have seen the sunnah of reciting the dua before sleep and learned it word by word, now it is time to look for another sunnah of reciting the dua for waking up in the morning.
When you follow the little sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) you are simply conveying and proving how much you love our beloved prophet and respect our religion, Islam.

Al-hamdu lil-lahil-ladhi ahyana ba’da ma amatana; wa ilaihi an-nushur
Dua for Waking Up in the Morning in English
All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us and unto Him is the resurrection.
Dua for Waking Up in Arabic
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Hope you would memorize this dua before sleep and dua for waking up as soon as possible. Those who persistently glorify and praise Allah will definitely have their problems alleviated and have a continuous flow of blessings bestowed upon them. Allah loves the deeds that are continuously done, Allah loves quality over quantity. So make a habit of reciting these duas every day and also teach your kids and ask them to memorize.
